About

Cabinet 49 is a curated collection of antique and early 1900s clothing. Founded 2014 and run by Gail Taylor. Each piece of clothing is carefully selected from her own perspective.

With a background and interest in studying film, art history and cultural critical theory, Gail worked in bookshops and a film library alongside developing Cabinet 49. The name and idea is inspired by the history of 'cabinets of curiosities' also known as 'cabinets of wonder' or 'wonder-rooms.' These collections of curious and precious objects where originally entire rooms; later becoming smaller, encased behind glass. Cabinet 49 is an ever-changing collection which exhibits these precious finds.

Gail travels throughout France and beyond, specialising in sourcing extra special pieces from theatre and opera costume, workwear, and folk-clothing. These garments are very often hand made with great artisanal skill, displaying quirks which you will only find with such clothing.

You can find Cabinet 49 most Fridays at the legendary Portobello Green Market in Notting Hill, London (nearest tube Ladbroke Grove). Cabinet 49 is a regular exhibitor at Frock Me Vintage Fair, London. Follow my instagram page (link below) for the latest news and updates.
