Antique 18th–19th Century French Silk Velvet Waistcoat | Double-Breasted Vest with Embroidered Buttons | Georgian / Regency Era

A remarkable survivor from the late 1700s to early 1800s—a French waistcoat in luminous silk velvet, alive with rich tones of orange-red, golden yellow, blue, and black. This piece speaks to an era when clothing was both art and statement, made to last and to be admired.

It’s double-breasted in style, featuring a short stand collar and delicate covered buttons, each embroidered by hand. Two front pockets sit neatly at the hip, their edges softly worn from use. The interior and back are made from a coarse weave sacking cloth—an honest contrast to the opulence of the silk, and a reminder of the practical lives garments like this once lived.

Measurements:

  • Chest (underarm to underarm): 18.5”
  • Shoulder to shoulder: 13”
  • Waist (laid flat): 18”
  • Length (top of shoulder to hem): 20”

Condition:

Overall in very good antique condition, with a few age-related flaws worth noting:

  • The top edge of the right pocket is worn, with loose threads.
  • Bottom edge also shows wear, with some fraying and thread loss.
  • Minor discolouration at the underarms.
  • Buttons are intact and secure.

A rare and richly textured piece that would make a beautiful addition to a historical wardrobe, museum collection, or curated display.
