1790s French silk frock coat. This is so beautiful. Silk woven in a ribbed texture. Cut steel buttons. It was inherited by the costumier Mathieu and Soltages in Paris and used as part of their collection. They made and supplied costumes for amongst others the Opera Comique, Paris.

I believe this is an original period piece rather than a jacket constructed during the early 1900s when this costumier operated. I believe this for a few reasons, including the extremely high-quality silk fabric, the 18th century cut steel buttons are exceptional and the pockets are not faux like on all other jackets which I've seen made specifically for opera or theatre costume. They would usually be no need to have real pockets, so it's just purely for the style.

The underarms have been fitted with cotton inserts with lavender to protect this area from wear: consequently the underarm areas are in very good condition. *Antique lavender so no longer a scent.

I'm unsure how to refer to the colour shade as it's unusual: maybe a copper rose. It’s very beautiful and delicately rich.

Measurments: 20” underarm to underarm, 18” shoulders, 8 1/2” arm opening from shoulder to underarm, 24” sleeves, 40” long from neck to hem at the front

Condition: very good overall. There is some damage to the silk surface at the collar with a larger parch worn away at the top right of the collar and around the back of the neck. There is some damage at the bottom of the tailcoat where the silk surface is also worn away. There is some general very slight scuffing to the surface of the silk in areas from natural light wear. The lining has some holes: inside right of the collar, just below the costumier label and on the left tailcoat. These would need to be secured really to prevent further ripping.

Please I inspect the photos and ask any questions you have. I am happy to send more images of the damaged areas if needed.
