Traditional Transylvanian folk coat made from thick, natural brown wool with black velvet trim. It has a long, simple cut and two horizontal-entry pockets at the waist. The coat is unlined and has a rustic, textured appearance, with natural variation in the colour of the wool.
There are two buttons at the front but only one buttonhole, so the coat fastens at the top only. These coats were typically worn open, likely over multiple layers, including waistcoats.
This is quite an exceptional piece—extremely well made and, quite incredibly, appears to be entirely hand-stitched. The wool is very thick, which makes the hand construction especially notable. The back features a raised pattern in the wool in a geometric, deco-like shape.
I sourced this coat in Transylvania in recent travels.
