c.1920s French Opera Warrior Woman Costume – Caramel Wool with Metal Studs, Quilted Interior
Incredible and rare warrior woman costume, made around 1920 for the French Opera in Marseille. The structured caramel brown wool body is adorned with metal dome studs and stylized breast plates. Cutout fabric shapes hang from the waist and shoulders, adding bold movement and drama. Fastens up one side with metal hook-and-eyes.
Color-blocked with blue and pink cotton twill and red wool panels, the interior is slightly quilted and padded to give it body and presence on stage. Inside are costumer’s stamps and a beautiful handwritten label (partially illegible).
