A stunning c.1930s - 40s French opera costume tunic dress, attributed to celebrated designer Henri Lebrun. Lebrun designed for French theatre and opera before moving to Hollywood, where he worked on films such as Don Juan (1956) and Swords of Blood (1962). This piece comes from the same collection as another confirmed and labelled Lebrun design.
Made from soft pink grosgrain fabric, this theatrical tunic dress features bold black soutache embroidery and silk trim arranged in dramatic geometric patterns. It has wide sculptural sleeves lined with white gauzy fabric, deep side slits, and fastens up the back with metal hooks and eyes (some missing). A visually striking, rare example of early 20th-century stage costume.
Measurements (laid flat):
- Underarm to underarm: 17.5 in / 44.5 cm
- Shoulder to shoulder: 19 in / 48 cm
- Sleeve length: 15.5 in / 39.5 cm
- Length (shoulder to hem): 45 in / 114 cm
Condition:
Good condition overall with some wear and signs of use consistent with its age and stage use:
- Freshly hand-washed in cool water with gentle detergent
- The collar has come unstitched and is frayed at the edges – needs restitching
- Some metal hook-and-eye closures missing at the back
-
Stains and marks include:
- A few light grey specks down the front (hardly visible)
- Bluish marks near the left underarm, on the top of the left sleeve, and on the back
- Rust marks on the left sleeve top
- Minor wear to the fabric at the back right, near the waist
- The tunic is not lined, except for the sleeves, which are lined in sheer white gauze
Despite its flaws, this is a rare and evocative piece of 1930s French costume design, rich in history and visual drama.
