A folk blouse from 1930s Transylvania, made from thick, homespun and woven linen in a natural tone. The blouse is entirely hand stitched, including the pintucks, buttonholes, and embroidered details. It features mother-of-pearl buttons down the front, fine vertical pintucks, and a rounded collar edged with eyelet embroidery. The sleeves are full and gathered at the shoulder and cuff, with a band of vivid blue embroidery at each cuff, also fastened with mother-of-pearl buttons. The hem is finished with white cutwork and embroidery.
The linen shows irregularities in the yarn, characteristic of homespun cloth. Sourced in Transylvania.
Measurements:
- Chest (underarm to underarm): 22.5 in / 57 cm
- Shoulder width: 16.5 in / 42 cm
- Shoulder to underarm: 9 in / 23 cm
- Sleeve length (shoulder to cuff): 23 in / 58.5 cm
- Length from neck to hem: 26 in / 66 cm
- Neck circumference: 13.75 in / 35 cm
Please note that while the chest measurement is relatively roomy, the neck opening is small and the shoulder-to-underarm measurement is especially important when assessing fit. The sizing of these traditional blouses typically depends more on that arm opening than on mainstream shirt measurements.
Condition:
Freshly laundered. The linen shows natural irregularities in the weave, consistent with its homespun character. There is some rust-toned staining on the back, shown clearly in the photographs.
