1880 Paris Opera Costume – Aida Premiere, Palais Garnier

An extraordinary and museum-worthy opera costume, created for the 1880 Paris premiere of Verdi’s Aida at the Palais Garnier—conducted by Verdi himself. This piece, part of a small surviving group from that legendary production, is a rare example of 19th-century theatrical costume design at its height.

Crafted entirely by hand, the tunic is made from a lightweight purple wool and lined in cotton or linen. The design is steeped in symbolic detail: celestial appliqués of the sun and moon embellish the upper section, while pyramid and column—or possibly stylized tree—motifs decorate the lower. Gold metallic ribbon trim adds subtle richness, reflecting the grandeur expected at one of Europe’s most prestigious opera houses.

This is a pinafore-style tunic with an open back, fastening with bone buttons. The back falls into a dramatic point, creating a sculptural silhouette that would have moved beautifully on stage. An interior pocket remains intact—a rare and practical feature. The garment was later shortened and shows signs of this adjustment, including remaining stitching, sun fading, and structural changes. Every element is hand-stitched, reflecting the precision of 19th-century Parisian costume ateliers.

Measurements:

Underarm: 21” across

Waist: 19” across

Length (shoulder to front hem): 54” (longer at the back)

Condition:

Freshly hand-laundered with gentle detergent and steamed. Condition is consistent with age and stage use: visible sun fading, multiple patch repairs, scattered small holes, and a large hole at the back as shown. Lining has staining, and stitches from previous alterations remain. The back is somewhat unfinished and may require adjustment for wear, though it presents beautifully for display or study.

An astonishing and rare piece of operatic history—ideal for museum or private collection, theatrical archive, or as a centerpiece in a historical costume display.
