Delightful antique 1920s French Mephistopheles costume, made in silk velvet with striking red satin lining and details. Likely created for fancy dress, with the quality suggesting possible theatre or opera use. The set survives in its entirety, which is exceptionally rare.
Sourced in person, in France.
A five-piece ensemble comprising:
• Black silk velvet jacket with a front fastening of red glass ball buttons and metal poppers at the cuffs
• Matching black silk velvet cape with red satin lining and cord ties
• Black silk velvet Renaissance-style breeches with red satin inserts
• Pair of red silk stockings
• Extraordinary structured red satin headdress
To find a full set, complete with stockings and original headdress, is highly unusual. This rare surviving ensemble is of exceptional design and quality, and would be worthy of inclusion in a museum collection.
