These antique trousers were made in France in the 1920s by Aristide Boyer of Marseille for opera or theatrical use. Tailored in a wide, gathered silhouette, they are made from rust-coloured wool, fully lined in cotton, with deep pleats and buttoned cuffs.
The front features vertical appliqué woven silk ribbon in light pink, dark pink, and black, bordered with metallic braid and detailed with sewn-on faceted glass gems that reflect beautifully under light. The trousers close with a button fly and have a cinch-back waist with a metal buckle for an adjustable fit.
At the ankles, a separate piece of fabric with a tie closure has been added, extending the original length.
Measurements (taken flat):
- Waist: 14.5 to 17 inches / 36.8 to 43.2 cm (adjustable via back buckle)
- Rise: 13.5 inches / 34.3 cm
- Full leg length: 33.5 inches / 85.1 cm
Condition:
- Freshly laundered and clean
- Made from wool, with a cotton lining
- Multiple hand-sewn repairs across the front
- Some small holes remain, likely moth damage
- A few holes have not been darned (see photos)
- Grey marks and stains are visible on the back of the legs
- Additional fabric with ties has been added to the ankles
- Structurally sound and fully wearable with care
