A remarkable and rare example of 19th-century high-status formalwear, this waistcoat is crafted from metallic gold-thread brocade in an intricate floral design. Trimmed with lattice-woven gold braid and fastened with ornate braided frog toggles, the piece reflects both Ottoman ceremonial dress and European Orientalist fashion of the mid-to-late 1800s.

The stand collar, symmetrical toggles, and deeply pointed “V” back hem suggest tailoring trends consistent with the 1855–1875 period. These features point to either:

  • A court or diplomatic waistcoat from the Ottoman Empire, incorporating Western tailoring influence
  • Or a French or Austro-Hungarian ceremonial piece inspired by East Asian and Middle Eastern motifs, fashionable during the Second Empire (1852–1870)

The cut and embellishment indicate it was likely worn by a court official, diplomat, or high-ranking individual, possibly for ceremonial or presentation purposes.

Measurements (laid flat):

  • Chest (underarm to underarm): 19.75” / 50 cm
  • Shoulder width: 15.75” / 40 cm
  • Waist width: 18.5” / 47 cm
  • Length (shoulder to hem): 20.5” / 52 cm

Note: Measurements are taken flat; double where applicable for full circumference.

Condition:

  • Overall very good for its age
  • Underarm wear and some loose threads visible (see photos)
  • Tarnishing and mild discoloration at the back, typical of age and metallic textiles
  • Structurally sound and highly decorative—well-preserved for wearing, display or study

Historical Significance:

This piece exemplifies the fusion of Eastern and Western design during the 19th century. The fabric and decorative elements align with Ottoman luxury textiles, while the cut and structure follow Victorian-era tailoring traditions. A rare and collectible garment, ideal for collectors, museums, or historical costume study.
