A really wonderful and unique piece of costume history. This French opera costume vest dates from the early 1900s. It’s made from a rich dark brown early imitation fur, most likely woven goat hair, similar in feel to that used on early Steiff teddy bears. Decorated with silver metal dome buttons to resemble medieval armour. Finished with a scalloped hem edged and lined in cotton.
Fastens up the back with a row of buttons and a metal hook and eye at the neckline.
Stamped inside with maker’s mark Aristide Boyer, Marseille and the number 62, with a hand-inked name “Andre.”

CONDITION
Rust and tarnishing on a few of the buttons. A few metal buttons are missing. Tear on the right shoulder near the button, as shown, which could be repaired with stitches. Visible stitched repairs where there have been tears. Scattered repairs throughout, as is common with opera and theatre costumes.
