Marvellous antique French waistcoat dating to the early 1900s, made from dark brown silk velvet with a purple polkadot pattern. Features a shawl collar, five black glass and brass buttons and three curved pockets. Trimmed throughout with woven braid in purple and black. The back is made from glazed brown cotton with an adjustable buckle waist tab. The lining is cotton.
The polkadots appear purple now, but if you look beneath the fold of the shawl collar, you can see their original, brighter colour—closer to magenta—before fading.
