Exceptional c.1775 French Men’s Needlepoint Slippers – Original 18th Century Footwear

Rare 1770s French Needlepoint Slippers – Dated 1775, Leather Sole

An exceptional pair of late 18th-century French men’s slippers, made with wool needlepoint uppers and leather soles and linings. The hand-stitched design features scrolling floral-inspired motifs in warm tones of pink, orange, red, yellow, green, and blue. Inside the left shoe is a handwritten date—1775—alongside a large “L” marking it as the left foot.

Found in France, these slippers reflect the craftsmanship and style of the Rococo and pre-Revolutionary era. During this time, men’s indoor shoes—especially for the upper classes—were often beautifully made but not overly formal, used in domestic or court settings. Slippers were typically flat, soft, and often decorated with embroidery or needlepoint, which was a valued domestic art and, increasingly, a commercial craft.

Needlepoint shoes like these were not only fashionable but also a display of taste and refinement. The pointed toe, low heel, and delicate construction are all consistent with 1770s French men’s footwear. The high quality of the materials and workmanship suggest they were made for someone of means.
