This exceptional antique French biaude smock dates from the early 1900s and is made from a beautiful, deep dark indigo-dyed linen. Traditionally worn by horse dealers, shepherds, and agricultural workers, the biaude was not only functional but also served as a “best” garment—worn on special occasions such as market days or fairs, when individuals wanted to present themselves and their animals well. Its detailed construction and quality materials reflect its importance beyond everyday use.
This example is made from a lightweight to medium weight linen, soft and fluid in drape. It features delicate pleating at the neckline and cuffs, and a finely detailed rib-stitched collar. The front fastens with mother-of-pearl buttons, while the cuffs close with black glass buttons — a lovely combination of understated elegance and utility.
