Antique French Breton Costume Dress Bodice Black Velvet Cotton Indigo late 19th century traditional clothing Britanny

A rare and collectible piece of traditional Breton folk clothing from the late 1800s. This two-piece ensemble includes a full-length dress and a beautifully structured velvet overlay vest.

The dress is crafted from black cotton with silk velvet paneling, featuring finely pleated detailing at the back and trumpet sleeves. It closes at the front with metal hook-and-eye fastenings and includes an indigo cotton lining in the bodice, velvet brush trim at the hem, open side hip slots (meant to accommodate an apron), and an internal pocket.

The accompanying vest is sculptural and structured, made from matching velvet and lined in indigo cotton. It features two boned sections on each front panel and fastens with large metal hook and eyes. When closed, there is a panel extension at the front that can be pinned or modified with additional fastening. Shown here simply pinned into place.

Condition: Very good for its age. Freshly laundered. One hole in the skirt (see photo), sun fading and light snags on the skirt, and a small hole at the edge of the velvet vest front panel where hooks may have once been. These issues do not detract from the historical charm or wearability of the piece.
