Antique French cropped jacket in the style of a Sans-culotte carmagnole, made circa 1920s and inspired by late 18th-century revolutionary dress. This version is constructed from ribbed cotton in blue. It features a short, fitted cut with a wide, open-point collar, long sleeves, and decorative metal buttons at the front and cuffs.
The jacket is open-fronted and does not fasten. Three large buttons on the front with three matching buttons on each cuff. All buttons have raised floral and geometric detailing. The jacket is fully lined in cotton or fine linen, with visible hand stitching, shoulder padding, and fabric underarm patches sewn in to protect the lining from repeated use.
Measurements (taken flat):
- Underarm to underarm: 19.5 in / 49.5 cm
- Shoulder to shoulder: 18 in / 46 cm
- Shoulder to underarm: 8 in / 20 cm
- Sleeve length: 21 in / 53.5 cm
- Overall length (collar seam to hem): 18.5 in / 47 cm
Condition:
Freshly laundered and in very good overall condition. The ribbed cotton shows only light wear. The interior is fully lined and intact. All buttons are present and original. Shoulder padding and underarm patches are in place and hand-stitched.
Historical Note:
The carmagnole was a short jacket worn by the Sans-culottes, the working-class revolutionaries of the French Revolution in the 1790s. Its cropped length, broad collar, and rows of buttons became a symbol of political resistance and popular uprising.
