Antique French opera costume. Renaissance style doublet. The main body is blue wool trimmed with silk velvet. The sleeves are grosgrain grey silk And this is also on the front panel. The sleeves and front are embellished with really lovely bead and sequin detail. The sleeves have the flash and puff style whereby the silk comes through the slashes. The lace up front is permanently fixed and decorative. Fastens with metal hook and eyes at the back. Lined in cotton.
Appears to be entirely hand-stitched it’s a very wonderful peace and a real treasure.
Measurements: 19 1/2” underarm to underarm, 16” across the shoulders, 23” sleeves, 17” across the waist, 28” long from shoulder to hem
Condition: very good condition overall. The blue silk on the sleeve puffs has a lot of wear and is shredded and with some holes in areas. There are also areas of damage with holes on the grey silk on the sleeves and near the shoulders. This hasn’t been cleaned due to its delicate nature And I’m not sure that the sequins would survive as they are most likely the antique gel kind. There are some marks around the neck line which look to be from make up: this section could be removed and hand washed and then reapplied. The same goes for the silk fabric trim on the cuffs.
It is very wearable and the wool body is sturdy. It’s just a few areas of the silk which are fragile and you need to be careful with those or find a way to secure them.
