This antique French tailcoat was made by Aristide Boyer of Marseille, likely in the early 20th century for theatre or opera use. Inspired by late 18th- to early 19th-century menswear, the jacket is tailored in a classic Regency-style cut with a cropped front, long tails, and a double-breasted closure.
The fabric is a bright green wool, fully lined in cotton. The coat fastens with eight 19th-century metal buttons featuring ring backs and decorative designs. The double row of buttons allows it to be worn left over right or right over left. Two buttons are placed at the back waist, in keeping with the traditional tailcoat silhouette.
