A 19th-century theatrical costume jacket, entirely hand-stitched and constructed in a style influenced by military dress uniforms of the period. Made for use in theatre or opera, with detailed workmanship and decorative embellishment throughout.
The outer fabric is a lightweight wool in powder blue. The interior is fully lined in cotton. Decoration includes silver-tone metallic passementerie:
- Woven braid trim forming chevron patterns on the sleeves and horizontal bands across the chest
- Embossed metal buttons with ring-back attachment (original)
- Coiled metallic rosette-style ornaments with hanging tassels on the front
All visible stitching appears to be done by hand.
Condition:
Freshly laundered and structurally intact, with visible signs of age and theatrical use:
- Scattered small moth holes throughout, including several on the back (see photos)
- On the front waistband, the right side has a cluster of holes; the left side shows moth nibbles and some fading
- Hole near the left underarm and a smaller one near the right underarm
- Patch repair on the lower front, with additional scattered small holes in that area
Measurements (approximate, laid flat):
- Chest (underarm to underarm): 17 in / 43 cm
- Shoulders (across back): 15 in / 38 cm
- Sleeve length: 21 in / 53 cm
- Shoulder to underarm: 8.5 in / 22 cm
- Length (neck to hem): 13.5 in / 34 cm
Sizing note:
Modern sizing is a relatively recent concept and doesn’t apply to antique garments. Size labels like “small” or “medium” — or modern dress sizes like 8 or 10 — vary widely between eras and brands. For accuracy, it’s always best to refer to the actual measurements provided, as these offer the most reliable guide to fit.
