Antique French Theatre Costume Tunic Dress Renaissance Medieval Style Red Blue Stripes Yellow Bows Rare

Amazing c.1920s French theatre costume. A tunic dress in a medieval/ Renaissance style. Beautifully crafted. The sleeves and cuffs are particularly great. Yellow appliqué bows on the skirt. It feels like a wool and cotton blend. Upper body is lined in grey cotton twill. Skirt section is lined in glazed brown cotton. (Except for the two newer panels which are unlined).  Buttons up the back. Appears to be hand stitched. 

Made by Aristide Boyer, Marseille: this is a truly exceptional costume piece. I have been lucky to find more than one of this costume type. I was surprised to find it again and I have this just this one remaining.

Medium size.

Measurements taken when flat: 20” underarm to underarm, 21” across the waist (42” doubled), 18 1/2” shoulders, 40” long from top of neck to hem.

Great condition overall. Freshly laundered. The opening at the back (just below the buttons) has a stitched repair and some fraying with a torn area. The back of the left sleeve has some holes and some crude sewn repairs. Some panels have been replaced at some time with a salmon pink cotton twill and one blue wool panel at the front. The wool panel has a couple of moth holes. A small section of surface wear on the left front of the skirt and a small darned repair as shown. A small area of blue staining at the back near the waistband.
