A Very Special Treasure – Antique French Clown Costume (1910s–20s)

This extraordinary silk clown costume dates back to the 1910s–1920s and is a rare piece of wearable history. Hand-stitched from brown striped silk velvet, it’s lined with striped cotton and adorned with appliqué playing card motifs. Rich green silk ruffles and green and silver sequins embellish the suit, with beaded shoulder trim adding to its character. The buttons are brass with vibrant enamel painting, and it fastens with hidden buttons underneath. Slit openings at the sides (unlined) hint at pocket-style details. Lace trim finishes off the cuffs.

Perfect for careful, occasional wear or as a standout display piece. It’s full of charm and theatrical flair.

Condition:

Overall in good vintage condition. There is noticeable surface wear, particularly where the velvet pile is worn down. The left cuff lace trim is torn. The main area needing repair is the crotch, which is split and requires sewing.
