Original French Infantry Tunic – Model 1877 – 123rd Regiment – Antique Military Uniform
Description:
This is an original French military tunic, worn by a soldier of the 123rd Infantry Regiment during the early years of the French Third Republic. It is a regulation Model 1877 tunic, the standard uniform of French line infantry in the late 19th century.
Key features:
- Regiment Number “123” embroidered on the collar, identifying the 123e Régiment d’Infanterie de Ligne.
- Double-breasted design with 14 original brass buttons, each featuring the flaming grenade insignia — a traditional emblem of French infantry.
- Deep navy wool construction with a skirted hem and standing collar.
- Decorative metallic braid on the cuffs, suggesting this tunic was intended for dress or garrison use.
- Manufacturer’s stamp inside: “Société Générale de Fournitures Militaires – Toulouse – 1883”, confirming both authenticity and date it was founded.
- Appears to be entirely hand-stitched, further supporting its age and originality.
Measurements (laid flat):
- Underarm to underarm: 19 in / 48 cm
- Shoulder to shoulder: 17 in / 43 cm
- Sleeve length: 24.5 in / 62 cm
- Overall length (shoulder to hem): 32.5 in / 83 cm
Condition:
This tunic has been gently laundered and is structurally sound. There are some moth holes, primarily around the lower section, consistent with the garment’s age. The bottom edge is raw and unhemmed — it’s unclear whether this is original or a later alteration. All buttons are present, and internal markings remain legible. Despite wear, the piece displays beautifully and remains a rare example of 19th-century French military tailoring.
