A Very Special Treasure – Antique French Clown Costume (1910s–1920s)
This rare French clown costume from the 1910s–1920s is a beautifully hand-stitched piece made from black silk with a brown cotton lining. The legs are decorated with appliquéd moons, and the entire suit is trimmed with gold metal ribbon, antique lace, and sequins.
Unique brass buttons, embossed with 18th-century hunting scenes, fasten the front. The shoulders feature long, pointed panels that drape like a collar at the front and hang dramatically low at the back. It also includes two side pockets for function and form.
Measurements:
- Chest: 25” underarm to underarm
- Length: 31” neck to crotch | 52” neck to ankle hem
- Shoulders: 17.5” across
- Sleeves: 28.5” (including pointed cuff)
Condition:
Good overall for its age, with some wear typical of antique silk:
- A few small holes and thinning in the silk, including a larger area on the back of the right arm
- Some loose trim and missing sequins
- Slight marks on the appliquéd moons
- All buttonholes need reinforcing (currently broken)
- Please note: The antique gel sequins will melt if washed—dry cleaning is not advised
Best suited for display or occasional, gentle wear. This is a rare and magical piece of wearable history.
