This is an original 1930s folk jacket from Transylvania, made from light to medium-weight cream wool and richly adorned with bold black soutache embroidery. It features four functional front pockets and decorative buttons along the front. The cut is cropped and boxy, with a high collar and sharply angled lapels, all trimmed in traditional soutache designs.
Procured from a recent trip to the area.
The embroidery is especially dense around the collar and front, and continues in pointed and linear motifs at the cuffs, back yoke, and hem. The interior is fully lined in a deep indigo cotton twill — a beautiful, sturdy textile that contrasts strikingly with the cream wool outer.
Measurements (taken flat):
- Underarm to underarm: 22” / 56 cm
- Shoulder to shoulder: 19” / 48.25 cm
- Sleeve length: 21.5” / 54.5 cm
- Length from neck to hem: 23” / 58.5 cm
Condition
Freshly laundered and structurally strong. The cream wool shows widespread moth damage, with scattered holes and surface nibbles, particularly on the sleeves and back. The indigo cotton twill lining is heavily worn, with multiple holes, tears, and fraying, as shown in the photos.
