c.1920s–30s Hungarian Folk Waistcoat | Embroidered Black Wool Vest with Mining Symbol Buttons & Rustic Striped Lining
This striking waistcoat is a beautiful example of early 20th-century Hungarian folk craftsmanship, likely originating from the northern or northeastern regions of Hungary or Transylvania. Folk dress played an essential role in village identity and tradition — each detail, stitch, and color often rooted in local customs and symbolism.
Made from a black wool blend and lined with coarse striped sacking fabric, this vest features vibrant hand embroidery in red, green, and white — the national colors of Hungary. Rows of domed brass buttons add texture and character, with several featuring a hammer and pick emblem — a symbol often associated with miners and manual laborers. While this might suggest a professional affiliation, it’s also possible the buttons were repurposed, as was common in rural folk dress.
The back panel is finished with a large floral motif, while two front pockets are trimmed with matching embroidery and buttons. These waistcoats were typically worn over a linen shirt and paired with embroidered trousers for ceremonial events, seasonal festivals, or Sunday gatherings.
