Antique French Opera Costume Centurion Roman Black Wool Gold Metal Lions Early 1900s Theatre

Early 1900s French opera costume. Centurion style. Lattice black woven fabric which feels like a wool and cotton blend or maybe just a fine wool. Purple capped sleeves and under skirt. Embellished with two metal gold moulded lion heads on the front and further gold floral, studded and scrolling metal appliqué pieces. Grey cotton lining.

Size: it’s adjustable at the back with three levels of buttons to fasten.

Measures: 36” - 40” chest, 31” - 33” waist, 18 1/2” shoulder to waist, 32 1/2” long from shoulder to hem.

Condition: this has lots of wear and areas of damage. It’s been cleaned by hand, in water with a gentle detergent. There are holes on the top of both shoulders where something had been attached. Lots of the metal pieces have come unstitched. Quite a few of the larger, lower metal pieces are broken and need some stitches to secure them. The underarms have split at the seams and have a lighter discolouration. There are rust like lighter stains on the front. Quite a few crude repairs. Some loose buttons. It needs to be loved as is in its slightly battered state and could do with a few repairs to make sure it remains sturdy.
